Cara Kruger graduated from PALI in 2022 and has had a very promising career to date, with a featured role in the kykNET film Horisonne and now as the villainous character, Tina, in the Showmax series Reënboogrant. For this month’s Focus On article, we had a quick catch up with Cara.
When and how did you realise you would like to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?
When I was still a little girl, my twin sister, Anri, and I always entertained each other. One would pretend they’re watching television and the other would be performing a show, she’d even “change the channel” so I had to switch my performance to something else. As silly as it may seem, I loved Barbie when I was younger and to me she was an actress, so the whole idea of being able to be anything stuck with me.
What is your favourite memory of your time at PALI?
I will always have a family at PALI. I was quite naïve as a first year, so to be able to look back and see growth and maturity is because of my lecturers. The Mane Fest play Jolburg will always be a favourite of mine and I loved performing in The Crew during my third year.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learnt as a young artist so far?
You are running your own race. I have learned that comparison is the thief of joy. In this industry it’s easy to get caught up in the vicious cycle of comparison and even jealousy. I had to remind myself that everyone has their own unique style and quirks about them. Learn from others, but don’t compare yourself to them.
Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?
Do it! People are going to tell you that it might not be “realistic” but let’s be honest, no industry is certain these days. Don’t let fear or the opinions of others stand in your way. Don’t forget to have fun. At the end of the day you want to like what you’re doing. I only had a dream and I had no idea how to make it a reality, but the Lord knows the desires of your heart, so make Him a part of your plans.
